Movie review: The Phoenician Scheme

★★★★

‘The Phoenician Scheme’ by Wes Anderson is an adventure/comedy film starring Benicio del Toro, Mia Threapleton, and Michael Cera.

It follows the story of a wealthy businessman, Zsa-Zsa Korda, who appoints his only daughter as the sole heir to his estate.

As Korda begins his new enterprise, his adventures lead him and his crew across countries – and cause them to become a target for assassins and terrorists after his money.

As a personal admirer of Wes Anderson’s films, I do believe that this is another incredible one in his collection.

I love the pace of the movie, as the common action scenes and heist elements are enough to keep the storyline flowing without over-complicating the plot.

As always, Wes Anderson nails the aesthetic and gives the film an ‌authentic, personal feel with his cinematography and colour grading style.

He also does incredibly well with his comedic timing and foreshadowing.

That was my favourite element of the film – Wes’s ability to keep a relative structure throughout the reoccurring elements and phrases whilst simultaneously introducing new puns and situations to the plot, making it easy to follow and all the more enjoyable to watch.
